Kata seminar 2016

The weekend of the 17th of September the SAKF decided to host a separate event for just kata leading up to the annual international seminar. The main aim for this seminar was to focus on the new kihon kendo kata that will be implemented from next year onward as part of the SAKF grading syllabus.

This new kata "Bokuto Ni Yoru Kendo Kihon-waza Keiko-ho" is a modern adaption of current kendo shiai techniques that are more applicable to the current state of kendo. The kata includes all the basic waza that any kendo practitioner would use during their kendo journey.

As this is a new kata syllabus, the purpose of the seminar was to provide a platform for new members to learn these 9 kata but also for the dojo leaders to learn how to teach this for prospective students.

The traditional nihon kendo kata was also covered, all the way up to the kodashi kata. All in all it was a fun day where dojo leaders got a chance to learn and discussed methods of teaching kata to members and also for younger members to get full exposure to all the different types of kata that are available.
