SAKF 30 000 suburi, in 30 days challenge

This past Sunday on 11 September 2016, the SAKF's 30 000 suburi challenge started. What it entails is that any member of any skill level must perform 1000 suburi everyday for 30 days in preparation for the annual SAKF October seminar.

Suburi, to those that don't know, is like kendo drills. There are only 4 basic cuts in kendo, and the only way to improve your cutting skills is by doing repetitive cuts. So in short, for this challenge members had to do 1000 cuts of any type (personal preference)

The only rules are that you must complete 1000 cuts in one day, it does not have to be done in one go, and they have to be basic cuts. If you skip one day or do not complete the required 1000 cuts, the count rolls over to the next day. Members are allowed to miss a maximum of 3 consecutive days before having to bow out of the challenge respectfully. If you do more than 1000 a day, the additional cuts do not get subtracted from your 1000 cuts for the next day. Cuts you do at the dojo does not count towards your 1000 cuts for the day.

The challenge also works on an honor based system. No-one is checking how many cuts each member makes, so if you cheat then you are just cheating yourself.

Currently there are over 50 members participating in the challenge, which includes numerous international kendoka.

In the end, this benefits only yourself. Each member gets out of this challenge what they want to take home. Doing proper cuts will ensure that your kendo improves, if you are just going through the motion for the sake of it then that quality of cut is what you will be doing in keiko and shiai. 30 000 suburi is more than enough to have a significant impact on your own kendo style.

We wish all members and Mushin members participating the best of luck.

Ganbatte!!

Update: So the challenge finished on 11 October, and the number of participants dropped significantly from the beginning. Well done to all members that finished the challenge, you are an inspiration to the rest of us.

Well done to Emile and Anesu from Mushin for completing the challenge!!
